Round table “Information Retrieval Systems to Help Scientists”.

On the occasion of the World Science Day, on May 1, 2024, the Department of Social Medicine and Health Care (Head of the Department Ihor Navchuk) and 3rd year students of the Faculty of Medicine held a round table discussion “Information Retrieval Systems to Help Scientists“.

Today information retrieval systems occupy one of the first positions among scientists in obtaining scientific information. Proper use of search engines allows you to get the necessary information quickly and reliably. This is extremely important for our university with its glorious traditions and powerful scientific schools.

For this purpose, the library staff members Sofia ZADEREY and Olena HIMCHYNSKA have considered the issue of fast information retrieval using information retrieval systems.

Data on information, bibliographic, abstract, full-text and scientometric databases freely available (PubMed, Open Health, DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), BASE: Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, ResearchBib, Ukrainian Citation Index, National Repository of Academic Texts, Scientific Periodicals of Ukraine, etc.), as well as databases accessible from the IP address of the university (Web of Science, Scopus scientometric databases) were presented.

At the end of the round table the library staff wished the researchers of the department success on the difficult path of scientific research.

On the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy in the reading room of the BSMU library, for students of the 3. I course of the Faculty N4 specializing in medical psychology, 3 gr. II year students of the Faculty of Dentistry held an information session “Pain and memory of Chornobyl”.

The audience was invited to travel back 38 years in their imagination to the city of Chornobyl, whose name comes from a kind of wormwood which gave its bitter name to the powerful nuclear power plant, the construction of which began in 1971. At the beginning of 1986, Chornobyl was the most powerful nuclear power plant in the European part of the USSR. However, Chornobyl will go down in history as the town that gave its name to one of the greatest disasters in human history. The students were told about the causes and consequences of the accident, when on April 26, 1986, a powerful explosion occurred in the fourth unit of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. The reactor shelter was completely destroyed, and due to the lack of a protective shell, more than 60 tons of radioactive materials were released into the air.

As a result of the Chornobyl accident, the nuclear reactor was completely destroyed, radioactive substances were released into the environment, and a cloud spread them over the territory of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and a number of European countries, causing radioactive contamination of the territory with a total area of 207.5 thousand square kilometers.

For Ukrainians, the Chornobyl disaster was a great tragedy that affected the lives of millions of people. More than 200,000 people were evacuated from their homes, and many never returned. Many people also suffered from radiation sickness and other radiation-related illnesses.

The audience was told about the heroism of the firefighters who were the first to arrive at the burning reactor, about all those who participated in the liquidation of the accident and in the construction of the protective structure, the sarcophagus, which hid the remains of the destroyed reactor. The heroism of these people will remain forever in the memory of the Ukrainian people.

The theme of Chornobyl was reflected in the works of many progressive writers and poets of the world community. The students recited poems by L. Kostenko, A. Bahryanna, H. Karanda and V. Zadvornyi.

The event was organized and conducted by librarian Svitlana TULEVSKA on the initiative of associate professor of the Department of Histology, Cytology and Embryology Natalia PENTELEICHUK and assistant professor Lyudmyla ANDRUSHCHAK.

On the 15th of April, 2024, in the electronic reading room of the library for postgraduate students of the 3rd year of study, the leading librarian Sofia ZADEREI held a seminar “Rules for describing and citing references in a dissertation”.

Preparing a bibliographical list of references is an important part of writing a scientific work, as it contains a bibliographical description of the documents used by the author when working on the topic and, to a certain extent, is an expression of scientific ethics and culture of scientific work, reflects the author’s work in collecting and analysing literature, allows to draw conclusions about the degree of fundamental nature of the research and covers the documents used when writing a scientific work.

During the seminar, the postgraduate students were acquainted with the rules of scientific citation on the basis of examples from primary sources, detailed rules for the design of certain elements of bibliographic references and quotations, as well as the possibilities and limitations of scientific citation. The emphasis is on respect for copyright and academic integrity.

Ihor SEMIANIV, Head of the Department of Doctoral Studies, Postgraduate Studies and Clinical Residency, thanked for the fruitful meeting and noted that the University Library always provides information support to postgraduate students.

On 21 March 2024, in celebration of World Poetry Day, a poetry reading event entitled “Poetry is an art that will live forever!” was held for pharmacy students in the reading room of the BSMU Library. The purpose of the event was to introduce the students of the BSMU Faculty of Pharmacy to World Poetry Day, improve their practical poetry reading skills, develop creative thinking, imagination, deepen their love of poetry, accuracy and precision of words.

Poetry is the music of the soul, mankind’s oldest spiritual treasure. It quenches the thirst of the soul, awakens the joy of life, the love of beauty, enters our lives from childhood and remains with us until the end. Everyone finds in it something close and understandable.

According to the resolution of the 30th session of UNESCO, held in Paris in 1999, it was decided to celebrate World Poetry Day every year on 21 March.

Modern Ukrainian poetry has been created over the centuries, with poets of different generations paying maximum attention to national and human problems.

Taras Shevchenko is the spiritual mentor of the Ukrainian nation. Today, the poems of the Kobzar are as relevant as ever. Students convincingly recited lines from the poems ‘Dream’ and ‘To Osnovyanenko’.

The participants of the cultural event were told about the representatives of the Executed Renaissance, who, while raising the state from its knees, hardly imagined that they would have to pay for their talent with their lives. The students listened with interest to the “Sixties”, a young cohort of cultural figures who held evenings in memory of repressed artists, organised informal literary readings and art exhibitions, fought for the Ukrainian language and culture, and revived national consciousness through their work.

Pharmacy students recited poems by P. Tychyna, V. Sosiura, V. Symonenko, V. Stus and L. Kostenko with inspiration. The poetic lines of contemporary poets, who with their apt poetic words try to join the brave warriors, who defend their homeland with arms, viz: B. Ponomarenko, N. Rybachyk, S. Obriy, L. Semeniuk.

The poetry quiz was very interesting, when a verse of a famous poem was shown on the screen and the audience had to name the author of the poetic lines.

The audience had a chance to read out their favourite lines, which was successfully used by students who recited poems by L. Kostenko, G. Dushchak, V. Stus, L. Legostaiev and S. Zhadan.

In particular, students from the Faculty of Pharmacy took an active part in the poetry recital:

  1. Anna Oliynyk – P. Tychyna “I assert myself”;
  2. Snizhana Datskiv – V. Sosiura “Love Ukraine”;
  3. Chayun Vladyslav – V. Symonenko “Where are you now?”
  4. Komanyuk Liliia – Ponomarenko B. “My Ukraine”;
  5. Tulik Yulia – Kostenko L. “Terrible words when they are silent”;
  6. Khrystyna Tsyupalo, Volodymyr Liutak – Kostenko L. “Berestechko”;
  7. Koziy Sofia – Stus V. “How good it is that I am not afraid of death”;
  8. Kulayets Angelina – Legostaieva L. “Two souls met on the moonlit path…”;
  9. Yakubyshena Iryna – Stus V. “O land lost, appear…”;
  10. Pidlubna Sofia – Semeniuk L. “Bucha”;
  11. Shynkarek Vira – Kostenko L. “Old woman, walking on the road…”;
  12. Zadorozhna Yana – Obris S. “Prayer for Ukraine” and others.

 We wish our students development, inspiration and realisation of their creative potential.

To celebrate the 210th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth, a series of events were held in the Student Reading Room of the BSMU Library.

Taras Shevchenko is a symbol of free thought, truth and fearlessness, a fighter for human rights and a great love of the Ukrainian people for Ukraine. He made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian poetry and became a symbol of national identity. Kobzar’s poetry is relevant at any time, but now, when Russia is waging war against the Ukrainian people, Shevchenko’s prophetic poems are particularly apt.

Library employees Svitlana TULEVSKA and Natalia ZHUK in cooperation with Associate Professor of the Department of Histology, Cytology and Embryology Natalia PENTELIICHUK and Assistant of the Department Lyudmyla ANDRUSHCHAK held a poetic and artistic living room “Kobzar’s Prophetic Word” for the second year students of the 19th and 20th groups of the Medical Faculty No.2, the first year students of the Dental Faculty and the first year students of the 3rd group of the Medical Faculty No. 4.  While watching a multimedia presentation, the students were told about the importance and power of Shevchenko’s words. On the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, a literary lesson “Language Unites the Nation” was held for the first year students of 1,2 groups (base 9) of the specialty “Pharmacy” of BSMU College (online).

Every year on February 21, the whole world celebrates the International Mother Language Day, which was established in November 1999 after the thirtieth session of the General Conference of UNESCO to protect linguistic and cultural diversity. In its short existence, it has already become a tradition because it is one of those days when everyone can feel part of their great nation.

The students were told about the tragic events that preceded the establishment of the holiday.  They were also told about the development and enrichment of the Ukrainian language, because the path of its development is a thorny path of struggle. During the event they spoke about the representatives of the “executed revival”, about the dissidents who opposed the Russification of Ukraine in the 1960s. And about today, when language is one of the main factors in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The students recited poetic lines of M. Rylsky, Y. Rybchynsky and D. Pavlychko.

The event was prepared and conducted by the librarian Svitlana TULEVSKA and the BSMU teacher Yulia KROPELNITZKA.

The Decree of the President of Ukraine “On honoring the heroism of the participants of the Revolution of Dignity and perpetuating the memory of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes” dated February 11, 2015, established a special memorial day in the country – “The Day of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes”, which is celebrated annually on February 20. This was done “in order to perpetuate the great human, civic and national courage and dedication, strength of spirit and resilience of citizens, which changed the course of history of our country, to honor the feat of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, who gave their lives during the Revolution of Dignity (November 2013 – February 2014), defending the ideals of democracy, human rights and freedoms, the European future of Ukraine,” the document says.

An artistic lesson “In Our Memory They Remain Forever” was held for the first-year students of groups 1-4 of the 1st Medical Faculty in the reading room of the BSMU library.

Today, in the midst of the war in Ukraine, we must remember the fateful events that became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and dignity. Maidan is no longer the name of a place. It became a symbol of freedom. During the event the audience was told about the final and most dramatic stage of the revolution – the events in Kyiv on February 18-20, during which more than a hundred of our best sons and daughters were killed. On February 18, instead of resolving the situation peacefully, the government of the day issued a criminal order to take up arms and “clear” the Maidan with firearms. Thousands of people were injured and nearly 100 people were killed by snipers and special police units.

The students were told about the very young heroes who, following the call of their souls, defended the European future of the country on the Maidan.

Today, during the war, it is especially important not to forget where it all began, because it was the first battle of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the battle for freedom and independence.

The event was organized by the chief curator of the Medical Faculty No. 1, Associate Professor of the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics Mariana Kryvchanska, library employees Svitlana Tulevska and Natalia Zhuk.

         The event was held in the presence of the curators of the first year, groups 1-4 of the Medical School No. 1, associate professors Iryna Yaremiy, Valentyna Bevzo (Department of Bioorganic and Biological Chemistry and Clinical Biochemistry), Kateryna Vlasova, Volodymyr Voloshyn (Department of Medical Biology and Genetics). Technical assistance was provided by Marina CHAPARA.

On January 29, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of Kruty, the 106th  anniversary of the heroic battle of Kruty, which is an important symbol of patriotism, faith and self-sacrifice of Ukrainian students who stopped the Bolshevik offensive on Kyiv in 1918 at the cost of their lives.

An information session “The Battle for the Future” was held for the freshmen of the Pharmacy specialty of groups 1 and 2 (base 9), the sophomores of BSMU College with the cooperation of college teachers Yulia Kropelnytska, Kateryna Kupchanko and librarian Svitlana Tulevska.

The battle of Kruty was successful for the defenders of Ukrainian statehood. Thanks to their advantageous position and heroism, the Ukrainians managed to inflict significant losses on the Russians and hold off the offensive until nightfall. The Russian-Bolshevik attackers lost their ability to fight for four days. The aggressor had to bring in new forces, repair the blown up and destroyed bridges and railroad tracks, and only then continue its attack on Kyiv. The most important thing is that this delay allowed to complete the most important thing – to sign the Brest peace treaty with the countries of the Quadruple Alliance and to achieve the recognition of the UPR as a subject of international relations.

We honor the memory of the heroes of Kruty, who with their will and fire gained precious time for the Ukrainian state – it was a battle for the future, and it is still going on!

January 22 is an important historical holiday – the Day of Ukraine’s Unity. It is important because it is directly connected with the struggle of Ukrainians for freedom, self-determination and unity.

For the first-year students of the specialty “Pharmacy” of the 1st and 2nd groups (base 9), the 2nd year (base 9) of BSMU College, with the cooperation of college teachers Yulia Kropelnytska, Kateryna Kupchanko and the 1st category librarian Svitlana Tulevska, an information hour “Ukraine is united” was held (online).

The aspiration of the Ukrainian people to create its own state has been present at different stages of development and in different epochs. 105 years ago, on January 22, 1919, on St. Sophia Square in Kyiv, the Act of Unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR) was proclaimed, which became an epoch-making historical event when the Ukrainian lands were united into one state. It was a fundamental milestone in Ukrainian statehood and the culmination of the unification aspirations of Ukrainians in both parts of Ukraine. For many decades, the Unification Act remained an ideological imperative of the struggle for an independent, United States.

Today, Ukraine continues its struggle for independence and unity. Unity also implies the memory of the common past and requires cohesive cooperation for the sake of the future, both on the battlefield and on the home front. After all, we have the same goal: an independent, democratic and united Ukraine!
